Where would Cresswell rank
Think we’re all agreed that he’s past his prime now and is on his way down (some would argue over the speed of the decline).

He’s undoubtedly been a good servant for us over the 9 seasons or so, which got me thinking - where would he rank in our PL era left backs and total history left backs?

For me, he’s Second to Dicks in the Premier League. All time, I’d assume Dicks and Lampard Sr are above him. Who else?

Also, we’ve had some really average left backs over the years.

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Since we moved to the London Stadium Cresswell has been found out on the bigger pitch. He should have been replaced then. Most teams that play us target his wing. He has a penchant for being caught out of position with no speed to recover the situation. He has the irritating habit of turning his back when players go in for a shot. That kid Scarles who played the other day put in more accurate crosses than Cresswell has all season and had more alternatives than Cresswell's backward passing.

Good shout. Bish was a wonderful player, absolute class,. Talking about defence splitting passes I stumbled across Spurs 1 West Ham 2 on You Tube last night and the pass by Eyal Berkovic to Marc Keller for his goal was world class. Berkovic another fabulous technical player, shame it went tits up with Hartson!

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Dicksy's left foot was an absolute wand, I'd say the crossfield passes stand out more than the long range strikes. One of the first games I went with just mates, and he was ridiculous, running the game from left back, it was man against boys.

I struggle to get my head around anyone who watched him regularly not remembering how good he was. And as Sold0 said, his standing leg was poggered for years.

Northern

And of course Dicks was more than capable of a raking cross field ball to the feet of a teammate like Glenda used to do at Spurs.

But of course the history books of the general media focus solely on his hot headed early years when Bonzo had to drag him off the pitch against Wolves.

The lazy cunts

Spot on... those 2 players was what got me out of bed to watch us in those days... started going in 72 so saw a lot of FLS... what I remember of him was a bloody good player... hard as nails... decent footballer... but he was not in JD's class... better in the air... as good a defender... far more of a goal threat.. deadly on pens... better assists... and could control games... all from left back... he was a freak of a footballer... especially playing half of his career with one knee

Surface making a stupid statement then falling back on pedantry and semantics to somehow prove it wasn't stupid after all? Surely not!

A waste of all your time trying to reason with him though, may as well try and nail jelly to to the wall

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
Julian was an immense, inspirational player in seriously lean times. The same as Bishop - a player ahead of his time surrounded by shit.

He was a Pirlo type player in a time of rudimentary tactics. I still can't forget his sublime defence splitting passes which most of the other carthorses were too dumb to read. Apart from Morley on the odd occasion.

Quality, he’s added Parker to his list of overrated now! So that’s Dicks, Di Canio and Parker.

Any more Surf?

Can anyone see the irony with Eeerie posting this:

'And doing his usual mental pedant meltdown to try and save himself. Top stuff.'

As the paragraph immediately following this:

'I reckon this shout by Surface has to go down as the worst football opinion ever given on this site.'

There are lots of people getting all foamy-mouthed on this thread, you included. Sadly for you, none of them are me and all of them reinforce my point.

"Some of you are reacting like he was one of the clubs greatest ever players. He wasn't. Nowhere near. Not unless 'the clubs greatest players' is a fucking long list."

In the 90s he was one of our best players, yes. Often the best on the pitch. As Manuel said he could be all over the place doing everything, for a fat lump he could move.. and yeah could be overly-aggressive but that added to his entertainment value.

Dunno what other metric you'd personally use?

Re: Where would Cresswell rank
It’s all about opinions. For me a WHU best eleven of the EPL era would include Dixie. Whereas a best WHU eleven of players I have seen over the years would not include him because I think that Cantwell and FLS were better players overall.

Arguing about the rating level of him is pointless. He was voted four times as HoTY by the fans and for some time sort of held a cult status rather as Ginge did. We love a player that demonstrates absolute commitment.

Takashi Miike 11:03 Sat Nov 5

See, now you're making things up to try to make your argument easier to make. I didn't 'compare him to... Repka' in general, I said his tackling was 'Repka-like'.

That's called a straw man. You could look it up at the same time you look up what 'over rated' means.
